Be A Presentation Ninja!

Would you rather swim Bass Strait than stand before an audience and present? Does the thought of presenting send shivers down your spine? The good news is, you’re not alone. I can tell you, being nervous is natural and OK. More than that, it’s actually good. It focuses you and encourages you to be prepared.

There it is, the “p” word – “preparation”. Whatever audience, as a professional MC and presenter I encourage you to prepare in advance. Here are some simple strategies to help you get organised:

  • don’t prepare five minutes or an hour beforehand – do it two weeks ahead

  • plan out what you need - words, facts, images, video

  • chunk out your prep so over time you can review and refine (the ‘r’ words too)

  • understand what your role and your message is

  • do your research

  • make notes about what you might have to do or how you might say things

  • keep your notes simple

  • if unsure of pronunciation of words or names, confirm this and write these phonetically

  • rehearse audibly and repeatedly in a mirror – present to yourself

So you’re prepared. Now it’s time to deliver. Here’s a tip you can try next time you’re on stage or in front of a group:

In presenting, you may be naturally inclined to use pages of notes while standing behind a lectern. For many people this works and that’s OK. If however you feel confident, stand away from the lectern and use notes or points on cards with a lapel mic. You won’t believe how much this frees you up and allows you to better connect with your audience. Be brave – try it!
